ISLAMABAD (November 21 2002) : The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (Nepra) has granted generation licence to Karachi Electric Supply Corporation (KESC) which, the government hopes, would be privatised by the end of December.
However, KESC's application regarding distribution licence and a special purpose transmission licence is being processed by the regulator on priority basis.
KESC is functioning as a public limited company, incorporated in 1913 under Act, VI of 1982 of the Legislative Council of India, as the licensee of generation, transmission and distribution of electric power. However, Nepra has granted licence under the Nepra Act, 1997.
The command area of the power utility includes city district of Karachi, Thatta district of Sindh up to Gharo, Lasbella, Hub Chowki, Uthal, Vinder and Bela, having an area of 2326 square miles.
KESC's generation capacity comprises 4 thermal power stations (two steam and two gas turbine) located at Karachi, having a total installed capacity of 1801 megawatt.
According to a press release issued by Nepra, the KESC would have the right to carry out generation business in accordance with Nepra Act, rules, registration and terms and conditions of the licence.
