As part of the American Institute of CPAs’ crusade to combat fraud, the AICPA and the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners have teamed up to launch a new fraud detection and prevention course aimed at providing a benchmark for CPAs.
The CD-ROM course, Fraud and the CPA, offers eight hours of continuing professional education. It covers topics such as the fraud triangle, asset misappropriation, and Statement on Auditing Standards No. 99, the new fraud standard approved last fall by the Auditing Standards Board of the AICPA.
“The CPA is a critical player in fraud deterrence and detection, and therefore must understand the intricacies of fraud,” said AICPA chief executive Barry Melancon. In a speech at the Yale Club last September, Melancon called on members who audit or who work for publicly traded companies to devote at least 10 percent of their continuing professional education credits to the study of fraud.
