Lol... yeah without a doubt, my favorite one is that "Private Issues" one. I literally rolled on the floor laughing when i read that.
Sumaaan
I agree that SMR is going a bit ballistic over this issue and has said something which is a bit too much.
SMR ... cool off yaar, let the shooting, maiming and hurting to the lashkars and sipahs! <img src=icon_smile.gif border=0 align=middle>
On the other hand Sumaaan, there actually is quite a difference between the proverbial "Mulla" which SMR is talking about and our Aalim-e-deens. The word Mulla has become a term for describing a person who is quite illeterate about even the basics of islam and also about worldly subjects. But only because he has grown a beard, attended a few years of madarssa training, has read quran and adheres to the interpretation of quran and islam made by the head of his madarsaa, then uses that interpretation in issuing fatwas and setting down rules for his own adherents, loves to devour Tikkas in public restaurants and at the same time preaching piety to his adherents (i've actually seen this happen), he thinks that he deserves to be known as a Maulana or alim which is throughly against everything islam and our morals preach.
On the other hand, an alim-e-deen or mufti is in essence a person who is literate in both islamic and worldly studies, has knowledge of other religions and sects, is up to date with current local and world events and happenings, has thoroughly studied and understood different interpretations of islam, quran and hadith and secular law, is both pious in word and in practice, believes in and practices research, consultation, open discussion, qayas, ijtihad and ijmah and never ever issues any fatwas on a personal level.
