First of all let me just say that I'm not a huge fan of Dr. Amir or his political party. I also think he talks too much.
On the other hand, I don't know how you got the impression that he is trying to "modernise" Islam. Besides, is having a beard what makes a person knowledgable? okay, it is a sunnah but only a beard does not make you a molvi. It's your thoughts and knowledge that make you who you are.
I have seen incidences that when people made such questions on the show as to "modernise" Islam he got pretty upset. Like one woman said that Hazrat khadija and Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) sent each other gifts and messages (Na'uzu Billah) before getting married and when a guy asked that if one has relationship with a woman and later marries her is it okay. He got pretty angry at both of them.
By the way if you watch programs like "Alif" on GEO you WILL see people who would like to change Islam. There is this "Scholar", I can't remember his name, who says that there is no concept of Hijaab in Islam. He has a beard by the way and dresses in relatively simple clothes. Now these are the people we should stand up against and not poor old Amir Liaqat who may be a little annoying and show off but overall seems to be doing a good and informative show on TV.
