Dear Faraz & Pracs,
I dont advocate having beards or that religious leaders should have beards. Its Dr. aamirs personal matter & I never intend to interfere with the way how he dresses ! Its just that even if someone going on the street dressed so extravagantly...I would have thought of him as a show-off & attention demander. So I gave general comments about Dr. Aamir concerning that.
Pracs, Islam does guide us on how to dress "modestly" & within ethical values. As far as I know, the rich Arabs in the old days liked to wear these long..extravagant dresses which they liked dragging on the floor....whereas the peasants used to wear clothes till their knees or sthg. Our Holy Prophet (PBUH) instructed his followers not to that & this is perhaps the reason why...we are supposed to keep our pants above the "tuknaas" or whatever they are called...while praying...and generally in normal day life too. The sunnah, in this regard says
"And put on such dress that extravagance & arrogance do not mix-up"
Similarly, Islam also forbids men from wearing Silk or Gold, as this goes against their manly nature & demonstrates pomp & show. The Holy Prophet (PBUH) said
"Gold and silk have been made lawful for the female of my followers but unlawful for their males"
Islam also prohibts men from wearing flashy multi-colored clothes, as these are against the fundamental islamic concept of simplicity. It is reported that once a man dressed in bright red clothes passed by the Holy Prophet (PBUH) & saluted him but He did not respond because he disliked the sight of such a dress.
At another occasion, when he saw a companion wearing two clothes dyed in saffron, He said
"These are the clothes usually worn by the nonbeleivers, so do not wear them."
So you see, Islam does give us SOME GUIDELINES on how to dress. Islam is a complete code of life ! Dr. aamir being the host of a popular religious program should pay some attention to these Islamic teachings. Because people have started to Idealize him over here.
Please note that the above Sunnah & ahadith were taken from the rough notes of a research paper I wrote on "Modesty in Islam" 2-3 yrs ago.I remember trying to establish the accuracy of these ahadith back then..when I read them in a couple of books. But I really dont know how accurate the "wordings", "translation" or the entire ahadith are, coz I dont remember now. But I guess, you'll get the point.
Take care & Allah Hafiz
