Doing articles from a big firm definitely count to a good extent. However, as mentioned by one of the senior member of the forum, life does not end there.
It is for sure when a student does not get the opportunity of getting articles from a big firm, h/she losses something. Now this something is too much or very minute, can't say anything bout it and different people have different opinions in this concern.
However, qualification reduces this gap, and personal skill, in my opinion are more important than a firm.
So the things that count for having a good professional career are in following order.
1- Qualification
2- Personal abilities (I beleive mostly are inborn)
3- The firm
