I have read many of your threads and was inspired by the knowledge you have. I want to know what you are doing these days? R u pursuing ACCA??
I am qualified CPA (AICPA), living in Toronto for more than a decade and working in investment industry.
No dear, I never studied for ACCA. I only support presence of all global designations (including ACCA) in Pakistan to promote competion, availability of more options, more portability, improved chances of success and jobs for young age population etc. etc. It would bring prosperity to families of those students and eventually to Pakistan and its economy. I support promotion of education and free competition in Pakistan. I believe global designations which are currently available in Pakistan can really bring a change in long term.
I stumbed onto this board and read some of your threads. I think you are very humble and have a lot of class. Most importantly, you are giving back to the community with your experience. Right now, I am in a situation where I could really use a few words of advice from you.
I am 28, male, a Canadian citizen, born in Pakistan, living in the GTA. I will graduate w/ a Bcomm in 2 months here and I have been planning to write the CPA exams. I am somewhat typical in the sense that my parents gave everything they had to bring us here and educate us; meanwhile, their personal health, relationships, and lives basically went to the way-side. I may not be so typical in the fact that their health and finances deteriorated to the point that they live in a government house today, have debt at old age, dad is disabled and I dont know if they will be there to enjoy my success in life. Sometimes, you feel guilt, sometimes sadness, sometimes this motivates you, sometimes you wish you didnt have this burden on you- the burden to turn the situation around, do it sooner than later, and to make all their sacrafices worth it. The one thing that kind of helps is that they still support my every decision and they love me regardless of the fact that I did not have my priorities straight until later in life.
Hopefully, others can learn from this story but the story is not over yet. As I said I am about to graduate now, I am driven, have good experience and good marks, and really now have a chance to try to make things right. Since I am a Canadian wanting to do a CPA I would appreciate it if you, Toronto_Boy, will give me a few minutes of your time maybe over dinner or coffee (on me) to discuss this path. Hopefully you see this post soon.
Mujhe bilkul bhee andaza nahin thaa keh aap kisi wajah se jawab nahin de rahe hain. Mein ghalatee se yeh expect karr betha thaa keh jiss thread mein laugon ke harr sawal ka jawab aap ne diya hai (250+ posts bannay takk) tau shayed mujhe bhee meray sawalon ke jawab mil jayein gay.
Anyways, bohot maazrat. Abb aap se jawab ki expectation tau kiya sawal hee nahin poochun ga.....
Mr. Toronto boy,
I want to ask you that what is the general perception of CGA in Toronto? I have heard that its very difficult for one to climb the corporate ladder with a cga. I have searched A LOT on this matter online but all I keep getting back is CA vs CGA crap ( I guess people are same everywhere lol). My brother has just completed his degree and is now working for a company which is paying for his cga tuition ( he is living in toronto). I have asked him but he couldnt give me a satisfying answer as he is just starting out. So can you please give me an unbiased review on this?
Almost all jobs ads ask for either of CA/CGA/CMA. Qualifications are basic requirement of job. I don't think any employer pays big bucks just on basis of membership to any specific association. Value addition to organization is a way to climb up.
OK Thanx for your reply. This is EXACTLY what my brother told me. Its just my parents are hard to impress lol. I m trying to get good marks in ACCA but all they see is CA CA CA CA MBA MBA CFA n stuff. It just sometimes drives me crazy!!

I agree with TorontoBoy, the qualification whether it be CA or CGA is the most important thing. My impression is that after a few years in, its always the person and their ability/drive/character rather than the actual designation that actually matters (atleast in Canada).
