Some CGA Questions - Ontario

I am so glad I found this site.

I have some questions.

I have a college diploma in marketing (2 year), but I really want a career in accounting. I got over 95% in my college accounting courses, and from age 5 my parents and friends told me to be an accountant or statistician.

So finally now I am planning to become a CGA (in Ontario Canada). But there are several aspects of the training I'm not sure about.

1. Should I get my university degree and finish that off before registering in CGA Ontario and starting those courses? That way I can get many transfer credits and finish CGA sooner, as well as not repeat courses, and not have to do university / CGA at the same time.

2. I live in Guelph Ontario. I am pretty stable here with a job, nice apartment, family, girlfriend, friends, etc. Is the University of Guelph decent for business? I know I can't major in accounting, but is an economics degree OK too? Should I think about commuting to Laurier or Waterloo? I really don't know right now.

I would suggest you to see any of accounting teacher in your former college or contact local CGA Chapter to have a counsellor. There are hundreds of CGA students and members available in Guelph area, try to contact them directly. However, following are my two cents...

1. Yes, you are right. Completing degree or diploma in accounting and business would certainly help you much and give you exemptions as much as possible. See CGA's transfer credit policy at their website for courses completed in University/ College.

2. Well, if you can't do degree in accounting then consider diploma in accounting first, as a steping stone. Though degree in Economics would satisfy degree requirement of CGA, but honestly speaking, CGAs 4th and pace level courses are really difficult. U of Guelph should be fine for degree or individual courses to have exemptions.

I would again suggest you to contact CGAs local chapter. They should arrange a counsellor to you for all of your questions.
