salam o alikum
Dear members. I'm new this community. I'v used various other communities and I believe one of the best things that internet can give is the online communities.
Anyways I wanted to have opinions/recomendations to the situation where I stand now. I've recently completed my BBA from SZABIST Islamabad majoring in finance and have a respectable CGAP. I really enjoy figures and plan to have a career in finance. However in the long run I want to do a PhD and become a professor.
Now one of teacher has recomended me to do CIMA. And I really, really want to do it. I believe that professional degrees are more extensive than the acedemic degrees. But on the other hand If I pursue my MBA degree I can do it in one year from SZABIST isb. Now I seriously cant make up my mind weather I should do my MBA or should I start my articles in some reputable firm. Now as most of the members are hightly experiance, can you please tell me that on one hand I do the MBA on the other CIMA. which is better talking in every prospective after i've spend my one year.

Ehson, it depends on what you want to major in ? I mean as a professional career do you want to specialise in Finance, Administration, Accounting etc.? The CIMA/ACCA/CIA/CFM options are all viable and can be attempted without having to undergo articles at an accountancy firm. I mean you can pass those exams and be in an academic position to comprehend the level of knowledge and specialisation. However, as the accountancy profession has progressed in the last 10 years or so, all professional teachers for accountancy (especially chartered accountancy)are usually Qualified accountants. The perception in the Market is that only people with comparable skills (i.e education and the experience) are qualified enough to teach a CA candidate. Something in line with Professors in Medcial colleges who are Specialist doctors or Surgeons. The stress here is that a practicing profession is a better teacher than an academic alone.

My suggestion is that if your interest is accountancy / finance it would be a fruitful and learning experience to have gone through articles and qualified as some sort of an accountant. This will also cover the odds for you, say if you do not then decide to go into the profession of teaching. You know, something that can be banked on.

Ofcourse if you are just interested in Administrative sciences or other behavioural sciences a like wise degree should be your choice.

If I am not mistaken I recently saw adds from LUMS, who specifically asked for ACCA affiliates/members to join them as teaching associates.

Do let us know, what you decide on !

To be very honest with your I went throught a 3 year undergraduate program and after 1.5 year I started developin this feeling that I'm not learning anything new now. Plus I've seen the MBA guys in my uni, even now I guess I can be a better performer than most of them. I think i should consider this option non viable now

I mean I've never seen a faculty add which puts a special requirement of being a member of a perticular body. It really took me by surprise. Anyways I see you've develped a strong case mentioned how the experiance helps you to be a good teacher. And my experiance as a student says the teacher with some sort of working experiance tend to be more convincing.
