Why not our own businesses

I dont understand what is lacking in training of the graduates of commerce institutions.
Even after getting CA or similar eduction Peoples are reluctant to think of their own business. They have good deal of knowledge about the business, and still they hesitate. Probably our all Paki institutions lack the ability to promote inovation in students.
In UET Lhr. I have learnt that there is no mentionable research that can be named to UET, as far as I know.
What is lacking in our society which results in non promotion of entrepreneurship in our youth.

I dont know about any machine invented so far, which produces businessmen, I call it the quality by birth, if you visit Karachi from your village(kidding <img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle>), you will fine "Angootha Chap" buisnessmen doing business of millions of rupees, they dont have any degree, but they have employed lot of people prdouced by the machines like IBA, ICAP, ICMA, LUMS, Hamdard etc. etc.

well anam the thing is..,..our educational system produces "clerks"... when the british implemented BA in British India, the first batch on an All Indian basis were 24, out of which only 5 managed to pass. (this is 1850's). Next year ofcourse they revisited the marking scheme and had a 60% result. Let me remind u only the most influential were able to sit for the exam. The idea was to just form a band of literate clerks who could implement what was shoved down from above. The same went for the coveted civil services. Unfortunatley the same trend is continuing down for a 100 plus years.

ICAP, LUMS etc. may be on a better foot, but still have a long way to go. Science is grossly neglected in this country.

But i must also say, there are people with degrees who make it big in the business, u have to have it in u too... i have an accountant friend who left the profession (after qualifying) and is into maufacturing in Lahore... he drives a pajero and visits europe every year....

Business is paksitan also means going around the bend and thus getting u r hands dirty, u know tax evasion and stuff.

Besides an employed person is too afraid to venture into something which is risky ! get my drift

I believe ICAP and LUMS are two of the very few institutions producing quality executives.

whilst i agree that being business oriented is a God gifted quality. But I firmly believe and experienced time and over again that quality institutions polish the individuals to drive forward in busniess. There are number of examples, I believe, where people only managed to excel in business becuase they operated in a business like enviornment. Say I cannot produce an operating system like Windows XP or 2000, but If i have the chance to work in the development team of xp or 2000 for a long period of time, it will polish my ability to think about producing a rival product myself, I think its a fair comment, would you agree. and if you do then yes it is a God gifted quality but it can also be programmed in to individuals. Human beings are adoptive to their enviornment.

I think one reason is also the way business is conducted here. Very roughly and hardly no ethics, no social responsibilities, our business culture is based on exploitation, corruption; its actually a 'jugaroo' culture. But I think still that our education system is good enough that it can produce good businessmen (even in this environment) but there is a tendancy of safe play among the educated ones, so they think that if you are getting a good take home salary for 9 to 5 work why 'matha phoree'???

Plus in Pakistan risk factor is very high.
Fear of war
Fear of change of Govt.
Fear fo Jagga's (kali wardi wale)
and many more so new generation wants to save there future from these fears so they prefer job
infact ye to mujhe eman ki kamzori lagti hai waise bhi jo aap ke naseeb mian ALLAH ne likha hai aap ko mill kar rahe ga bus mehnat karo aur jaiz tareeqe se kamane ki koshish karo kaam chahe jo bhi ho..............

Several factors are behind this lack of enterprising spirit in Pakistani professionals.

- Responsibilities towards family. They want you to start bringing money in quickly and in large amounts. Doing you own business means that the first few months/years/periods wont realize any profits and even might incur losses.

- Lack of risk taking. We like to play safe in everything. We are so afraid of losing test matches that we like to play for draws instead of going all the way and winning.

- Lack of knowledge. Ppl dont know how a business is started, ie if they want to start a firm, what are the legal requirements etc.

- Peer pressure. A common thinking among professionals is "Since all of my friends have already got well-paying jobs, so should i. It would look bad if they are all making 30-40,000 a month and i am struggling to make ends meet in my own business."

- Laziness. We have all become lazy and 'haram-khori' has affected each and every vein in our body. Why should i work for 16 hours in a day and make 12-15,000 when i can make much more working for only 8 hours each day in a job. We don't realize that if we work 16 hours now in ur own work, one day we will be the seth himself rather than working for the seth and will be making much more money than we can ever make in a job.

for me point 1 mentioned by guybrush and the culture of bribes/ corruption/ red tape etc are the key impediments to entrepreneurship (hope got the spelling correct<img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle><img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle>)

I dont think fear of corruption and commission culture is what that keeps the younger and educated generation off running a business. As many of my educated friends are doing business, but know, what's uncommon b/w me and them, their fathers were already doing their set-up business, so no bothering setting up a darn business in this darn environment and because they knew the 'rules of the game', they knew who to give how much and when. one thing more, majority of my friends' fathers started their business from scratch.
