If there is one issue amongst others which sets off alarm bells in the minds of Muslims and non-Muslims, it's the status of women in Islam. While Western media, and more recently, secular feminist lobbies of the West and their sister lackeys in the East consistently attack the position of Muslim women, Muslims respond with anger and emotion. There is usually little said or done to address the real issues facing Muslim women in Muslim countries.

The problems of Muslim societies in the current context are numerous. Mostly corrupt elite run these societies. Most laws in these countries are based on a mix of western models with some cultural element. They lack values which Muslims cherish. The result is that law and those who are responsible for upholding the laws do not command respect of people. Weak people of all types, therefore, face oppression of one sort or the other in Muslim countries. These weak people include majorities like women. Here are some of the problems which Muslim women face.

Favoring boys over girls

Islam clearly came and wiped out this problem, condemning female infanticide and even condemned the attitude of unhappiness at the birth of a baby girl.

Yet today, the preference and favoring of boys over girls is still in swing. Not only are many baby girls simply unwelcome. They have to be reminded of this regularly, through attitudes and preferential treatment of their brothers.

Although the reports of the abortion of female fetus, common in China and India, are not found in the Muslim world, the attitude of preference could still be documented.

Access to mosques

During a visit to Karachi, Pakistan in 1992, it was time to do Maghrib. My brother, myself and my cousin were stepping out of the car when my cousin told me to wait because he had to "ask" if I would be allowed into the mosque. He came back after asking and told me he was sorry, but I would have to pray in the car. This was in a city where women can freely go to shopping malls, movie theaters, amusement parks. But the mosque, at least this particular mosque, no. This is a small example, but it's a significant one. Similar situations are played out in the Muslim world daily, where many women think going to the mosque is for men alone.

Literacy

Statistics point to the low level of literacy of Muslim women in Muslim countries. This is a shame for the people who claim to follow Islam, a religion which has made it a religious obligation on both sexes to seek knowledge. Women's literacy, and in turn ignorance of Islam is a danger to Muslim societies and their stability. What kind of quality of life will an illiterate woman have? And what kind of children will she raise?

The core of the issue Culture

These problem clearly stems from cultural attitudes that have been given precedence to Islam. The culture, by the way, is not only the "traditional" one, but also the new, neo-imperialistic Western one, which seeks to impose one vision for all women, with scant attention to the right of Muslim women, for instance, to maintain their own vision of rights and responsibilities within an Islamic framework.

Where do we go from here women have to take control

Muslim women, in Muslim societies and abroad can no longer sit passively by as their rights are usurped, whether it is by ignorant "traditional" individuals, or bodies like the United Nations. They must clearly reeducate themselves, not on the basis of a secular, feminist agenda, which is alien to the essence and core of Islamic teachings.

Rather, we need to not find out exactly what the Quran and Sunnah says, and live it. Then share it, then be willing to really fight for our rights. The change has to come from within. As long as Muslim women, especially in Muslim countries, passively accept the agendas of those whose interest are not Islam but anti-Islam, whether it is cultural practices or secular agendas, the problems will worsen.

Dear Friends,
It is the time to get out of the shells and face the reality. We are living in a global village and we have to give rights to our opposite sex. In my opinion it needs a change in attitude rather than religion. We are doing a lot of un-Islamic things like Interest etc but we have given it excuse. We should bring a change like followsâ¦

1. The subordinate place of women in Religious societies should give way to full social and legal equality.
2. Women should have freedom of action, be able to travel alone, be permitted to uncover their faces, and should be allowed the same property and inheritance rights as men.
3. No girl or woman should be subject to ritual mutilation of her person.
4. No girl should be forced into marriage, and no girl should be permitted to marry until fully physically mature. Every woman should be free to marry a man of her own choice without permission from a putative guardian or parents, or to remain single if that is her choice. They should be free to divorce and be entitled to maintenance in the case of divorce.
5. Women should have equal access to education, equal opportunities for higher education, and be free to choose their subjects of study. They should be free to choose their own work and should be allowed to fully participate in public life-from politics and sports to the arts and sciences.
6. Every woman should be free to enjoy all of the rights enshrined in the relevant UN Covenants.

To achieve these basic human rights for women, we need
1. To institute a civil state and a uniform code of civil laws separate from and independent of religious institutions, but allowing free choice of religious belief and practice.
2. To bring questions of women's rights and status out of the religious sphere and into the sphere of the civil state.
3. To enact a uniform civil code under which men and women have equality.
4. To pass legislation to enshrine the rights of women as set out in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the UN Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women.
And we should request in the name of justice, for the sake of human progress, and for the benefit of all the wives, daughters, sisters, and mothers of the world, all societies to respect the human rights of women.

Hi everybody! I'm a 23 old romanian girl. I study at Banking Institute and I work, like accountant for a firm. I deal with human resourses in this firm too ('couse in my country it's usual to pay a single worker for many activities). I work, usually, 10 - 11 hours per day, 6 days per week. When I take my first job, I was 16.
I read your posts and I was shoked about the idea "AS I SAID WOMEN SHOULD STAY AT HOME AND TAKECARE OF KIDS!". Sometimes I "dislike" my work, my family, my life, my country (when I'm sad)... and I want to change it... but...10x god, I'm not the man's who said these words wife or doughter.
Please, sorry for "my best english", I don't speek very well, I hope you understand my point of view.

Well elmin i personally think that women should have skills and they should use it in very very difficult situations I know many women who study so hard and got positions in colleges and than had admissions in medical colleges but after completeing their education they spent their lives as house wives...so if they want to continue their career than they should think seriously and if not than they should not waste the seats...many boys would have been elected on those seats for medical profession but they couldnt coz there were no seats available and they had to change their profession.

well the only reason a travelling campanion is appointed is for the safety of women,
as for hajab its not complusory. apni apni marzi ha , there r 2 skool of thoughts so ...........
acha as for inhertance rights , well women gets the half n its fare cos as man is the bread provider its his duty to provide for its family n also in a way a women receives both as a daughter n a wife so ...

remaining single , well conditions apply , n also the way a women handles the situation. its nothing out of the ordinary , islam has given women the right to choose .

well who siad they wwerent allowed to do all teh above , ab u r confusing the hundu culture n the islamic system. so women wont be allowed to do all teh above unless the hundu base is removed n an islamic system is estabilshed , not like tht of aghfanstan [D]
